But for the availability of good doctors in India, shoulder injuries could have cut short the careers of several sportspersons we know. Featured here is a comeback story of Karate guru Raman Ganesan, after being helped out of a shoulder injury by Dr Banarji BH.

Sporting events such as weightlifting, swimming, lawn tennis and cricket, or contact sports such as boxing, judo and karate, need sportspersons to power through their shoulders.

The muscles, the bone structures, the ligaments of the region are all called into use. Any serious injury to the shoulder, therefore, can be devastating, even career stopping, unless proper and timely treatment comes, and the sportsperson concerned is able to achieve a full recovery.

Dr Banarji BH is a specialist in treating injuries to the shoulder joint. He see a few hundred patients every year at his clinic, the Dr. Banarji Shoulder Centre in Bengaluru. Of his many patients, he has vivid recollection of Raman Ganesan, a Karate master, who went on to win a gold and a bronze at a tournament in Cambodia, a few years after being operated for his shoulder injuries

Ganesan, 62, is a 7th dan black belt, which puts him among the highest ranking Karate masters in India today. Karate had been his labour of love for 32 years. In fact, for his skills and his learning, he was elevated as a fight-movement drill (Kata) judge by the World Karate Federation International Referee Council in 2008 an achievement of no mean standard.

Incidentally, his injury did not occur during a fight. In 2012, he went on a climbing expedition, during which he dislocated his right shoulder joint and tore a ligament in his left.

The right shoulder joint had popped and a piece of the bone had chipped off, remembers Dr Banarji.

For professional players, treatment, recovery and return to sport are the driving factors. When Ganesan injured himself he was 52. Yet, he remained a high-priority case because he was  still playing the sport at the highest levels. Also, his livelihood through coaching, training and refereeing depended on him making a full recovery. Thankfully, owing to the operation performed on him, he could recover well-enough to go back to competitive Karate!

However, Dr Banarjis worst fears and biggest concerns are always for the younger sportspersons. They are usually the ones at the peak of their careers, and are mostly the medal prospects for home and country. A shoulder injury to them could just about mean the end of the road, unless of course, they too are able to find treatment at the hands of a skilled and competent doctor.
